Title: 几 (jǐ) vs 多 (duō) | Chinese Number Words Many Chinese learners always mix up 几 and 多. Today we learn their rules and many daily examples. 1. 几 jǐ Meaning: a few, several (1–9) Structure: 几 + measure word + noun 几 is before the measure word. Examples: • 几本书 jǐ běn shū — a few books • 几个人 jǐ gè rén — a few people • 几天 jǐ tiān — a few days • 几个朋友 jǐ gè péngyou — a few friends Question use: 你几岁?Nǐ jǐ suì? — How old are you? 2. 多 duō Meaning: more than, over 多 always comes after the number. Two different structures of 多 1. Round number + 多 (10, 20, 30, 100…) • 十多个人 shí duō gè rén — over ten people • 三十多岁 sānshí duō suì — over thirty years old • 二十多天 èrshí duō tiān — more than twenty days 2. Single number + 个 + 多 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…) • 五年多 wǔ nián duō — more than five years • 五个多月 wǔ gè duō yuè — over five months • 五岁多 wǔ suì duō — over five years old 🔥 Very Important Difference 三十多岁 vs 五岁多 • 三十多岁 (30+ years old) 31 ~ 39 years old We don’t say 三个十岁多. • 五岁多 (over 5 years old) 5.1 ~ 5.9 years old Rule you must remember: 1. For tens (10, 20, 30…): number + 多 三十多岁、二十多天、十几个人 2. For small numbers (1–9): number + 个 + 多 五岁多、五天多、五个多月 Common Mistakes ❌ 多个人 ✅ 几个人 ❌ 五多天 ✅ 五天多 ❌ 三十个多岁 ✅ 三十多岁
