Wood is a singular noun that refers to pretty much anything that is from a tree -- other than nuts, leaves or bark. Wood for a fire, wood for lumber and the like. So you would use "wood is" generally. "Woods" typically refers to a forested area -- lots of trees. Here "are" is correct. "The woods in this area are very beautiful during Autumn."

Are you talking about wood as in a collection of trees, or wood the material that comes from trees, and is used for making furniture etc.?

One is singular the other is plural . We visited the blue wood on weekend. We visited two woods this weekend.
