What do "recess" "match" and "panel" mean here?
From Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde :
"Tramps slouched into the recess and struck matches on the panels."

Recess = a small place, almost like a hole in a wall or a corner in a hallway.
Match = the little wooden stick you use (strike) to make fire
Panel = part of a door or wall. A lot of doors have 4, 6, or 8 panels on the front, like squares or rectangles on the front of the door.
