hi. i would try to answer your question as best as i could. Fraternity is a brotherhood or an organization which started way back in the early nineteenth century in universities (somebody corrects me please i'm not pretty sure). In this "club", members interact with each other, create bond and therefore friendship; thus leading the members to be recognize, and to feel the sense of belonging to a group or family. Now, as far as I know, Kappa is one of the fraternities in America. I heard there is one "Kappa Alpha Fraternity" in Texas University. Knowing this, there are many fraternities that exist within each universities or colleges; they have Delta Chi, Zeta Beta Tau, and so on. I would say no to the question about fraternities in British schools. I have read this article from a British school:(TD Est. 1921) "There are a few scattered chapters of a few select organizations in the UK, but they are not generally centralized at university like they are in the United States. Generally, students in the UK don't stay in halls of residence for the significant period of time that US students do, plus students tend to share flats with people they already know. In addition, the unions are very strong and offer a centralized location for students to meet, plus they do advocacy for the student body. Therefore, the niche for a sorority is very small, and frankly there isn't the cultural familiarity and/or drive for such things on most campuses (at least in Scotland). Additionally, I doubt the faculty would support such a thing...again this might be a remnant of the historic stuff we hang on to in the Scottish universities." -----Hope I gave you much more ideas:) -------

Kappa actually refers to a Greek letter. All the fraternities identified themselves with two or three Greek letters. On colleges, the fraternities are sometimes referred to as the Greeks. Along with fraternities, which are generally for men only , with some exceptions, there are also sororities - basically, an organization with the same setup as a fraternity, only for women. To join a fraternity, you would have to go through some initiation - a period where the established members make you go through elaborate and sometimes painful and humiliating rituals. One member would be assigned your Hell master - in other words, he would make your life miserable for the initiation period. After the initiation period is over, you are accepted as a full member. In my opinion, on many colleges, many of the fraternities were considered snobbish. Their drunken parties were famous. They did some good, though, and lent their aid to charities from time to time. Still, not my choice. As for "Kappa", many fraternities and sororities are know by their first Greek letters - the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity might be referred to as the Kappas.
