I'm going to guess at what you want. The word "English" was originally "Anglisc" or "Anglish". It was used to refer to any of three Germanic tribes that invaded England before 1000 AD - the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes, all from around Denmark. They were all considered as one people and so were just called the Angles and their language was "Anglish". This language was the basis for English, though it took a few hundred years and a French invasion to get to modern English as we know it.

"putting English on it" is a term in pool, and some other sports where a ball can move one way while it spins another. Just a side note.
