Death’s trapdoor is bounded over, escaped by agility, speed, and kinesis; abyss is acknowledged by looking down from midleap above it.

Sometimes you can escape a deadly, life-threatening situation by a combination of mental and physical agility, speed and force (and luck).
If you recognize the fact that death is near while you are avoiding it, you have truly recognized how close you were to losing your life. You have looked into the 'abyss' (hole) of death.
