比如--
1.) I got this present for you
2.) She studied very hard for her exams.
3.) This essay is for my Chinese class.

这三句里for基本都是“为了”的意思。
1.) I got this present for you
我为你准备了这个礼物。
2.) She studied very hard for her exams.
她为考试学习得非常努力。
3.) This essay is for my Chinese class.
此短文是为我中文课准备的。

'would have done' 的意思是本想做某事（但没有做成）。
1.) I would have gone to your house, but it was snowing too hard.
我本想去你家的，但雪下得太大了。
2.) He would have joined the swimming team, but he didn't have enough time.
他本想加入游泳队的，但他没有足够的时间
