Just say
Schade das zu hören.
In my opinion it means exactly the same.
You can also say..
Es tut mir (wirklich) leid das zu hören.

It depends a little bit on the situation. But the easiest way to say it is: “ Das tut mir leid”. “Das” is in this case THE bad thing what´s happened.
