"睡覺" or "睡"

I can't explain it but here's an example :
"I'm gonna sleep."
= 我要去"睡覺"了
= 我要去"睡"了

我 ==> I
要去 ==> be going to
睡 or 睡覺 ==> SLEEP
了 ==> I don't know how to describe... It has no meaning... It's like, "Oh! I wanna sleep, so I'M GONNA SLEEP "了"
