Tonari and Yoko What is the difference between the two words? From my understanding they both mean beside.

となり basically means something or someone neighboring. おとなりさん means your neighbors. よこ means a side or horizontal direction. For example, よこになる means placing yourself horizontally, namely to lie down. となりのひと and よこのひと both mean the same thing.
