why not "le sintio"?

"Metió los pies en el agua y la sintió fría" means "the person got her feet into the water and she felt it cold" ""Metió los pies en el agua y le sintió fría" meas "the person get her feet into the water, and THE WATER felt the person cold", which sounds weird, BUT, it could make sense in some sentences, e.g. "Él se acercó a ella y LA sintió fría" means "He came close to her and he felt her cold" "Él se acercó a ella y le sintió frío" means "He came close to her and she felt him cold"
