해야 하다 in the past tense Present tense: 더 열심히 공부해야 해요. I should (need to) study harder. Past tense: 더 열심히 공부했어야 해요. or 더 열심히 공부했어야 했어요. I should have studied harder. Is putting 하다 in the past tense optional? 감사합니다!

In Korean, only the tense of the last verb tells us tense of a sentence, so the past tense of your sentence can be "했어야 했어요" or "해야 했어요".:) \^o^/
