场所 is used when refers to a place for a certain use or activity, it is not frequently used，just phrases like 公共场所（public place），娱乐场所（place for entertainment）..地方 is place in general and the range of application is much wider, many times you can use 地方 to replace 场所

相比于场所，地方更加口语化。场所一般用于书面语言。
