싶어요 vs 싶어 해요
What is the difference between saying 싶어요 and 싶어 해요? I've heard different explanations from different people, such as 싶어 해요 is for 3rd person, 싶어요 is more intimate, and 싶어 해요 is used for specific things, but none of these explanations make complete sense. I would also like to know if there is a general rule for the use of 해 with other verbs, such as 좋다 and 슬프다. Thanks!

Explanation for 싶어 해요 is right, but 싶어요's not.
싶어요 is originated 싶다. It is for 'want', 'would like to', ... .

I have a few questions. What does mean? I don't understand what the grammar point sleep means in this sentence. Why wasn't if alone used?

싶다/ 좋다/ 슬프다/기쁘다 etc. function as ADJECTIVES. They describe things."good/ sad'
Adding 하다 change them into a VERBS. So you can use them to say 'I like'/ 'I'm sad' (1st person)
You always add 하다 when talking about IT, HER, HIM, THEM... (3rd person)'

When you use 싶어요 noun has subject marking particle, when you use 싶어 해요 noun has object marking particle.
나는 케이크가 먹고 싶어요.
나는 케이크를 먹고 싶어해요.
좋다 and 좋아하다:
if you want to express more precisely that you like something, you can use the verb 좋아하다, which can be translated as “to like” or “to be fond of”. The meanings might be similar but
since 좋다 means “to be good” the noun that goes with it is the subject of the sentence, and
for 좋아하다, the noun that goes with it is the object.
한국어를 좋아해요.
한국어가 좋아요.
슬프다 (to be sad) - is not a verb that can have an object
슬퍼하다 (to feel sad) - 그는 친구의 잇단 불행을 슬퍼했다.
