The traditional Mongolian script is used in Inner Mongolia. China has more than 50 ethnic groups including, but only two have their own alphabet - Mongoliand and Han Chinese. Inner Mongolians have hard time when they come to Mongolia as everything is written in Cyrillic. It's crazy, but it's a sad truth - the same nation (by ethnicity) is divided by different alphabet.
In Mongolia (independent country) the old script is taught in school. So, many people can read it, however, writing is somewhat difficult.
During the 90ies there was a lot of talk about damping the Cyrillic and adopting our old scrip, but due to lack of money (rewriting and publishing everything) and lack of enthusiasm (people are lazy, got used to the Cyrillic alphabet and didn’t want to learn our original script) there were never any real efforts or actions about adopting our old script.
In Buryatia, most people cannot even read the old script. Only very old and very intelligent people. But you can find many archive materials written in old script there. The same is true about Kalmikiya.
