What does the word "pitch" mean in the following context?
"We're all at a real pitch here,"one unnamed townsman was quoted as saying. "There's no use monkeying around. If the town got a hold of that guy, the town'd know what to do about him."
--------------------
I guess it might be an idiomatic use of the word "pitch".....

In this context it means an extreme depth or a very, very bad situation.

I'm not sure.
"Pitch" can mean "tension" or "excitement," often in the phrase "things had reached a fearful pitch."
If he had said "things have reached a fearful pitch," or "feelings here are at a high pitch," it would mean tension was so high that there was danger that it would explode into violence.
