From the lyrics "und wie ich mich der Wehen wehre", I gather "der Wehen" is plural genitive. I wonder if that is because of the verb "wehren", if that is the case, if the noun was masculine, would it be "wie ich mich das xxxx wehre"?

Yes, "sich dessen (Gen.) wehren" is an old expression that uses the genitive case. Modern usage is "sich gegen etwas/jemanden (Akk.) wehren".
In general, the verb determines the cases of the objects ("das Verb regiert den Satz"), so you should always learn the complete expression with cases.
For a masculine noun, it's "des", not "das": der Druck -> Ich wehre mich des Druckes.
