You can't use "era bien" but "estaba bien". Anyway, we use "fue" because the situation has already happened and you DON'T want to describe it, only to emphazise the RESULT: "El día fue bien" You had a good day and it has already finished. "El día estaba bien" Your are describing what was the day like, a not finished action.

En España usamos la expresión 'ir/venir bien/mal/regulal a alguien' para preguntar por algo a alguien. En forma impersonal se emplea más el verbo 'estar'. Ej: "¿Qué tal/Cómo te fue el examen? - Me fue bien...." "¿Qué tal/Cómo te viene (quedar) mañana?" -Me viene mal.." "¿Qué tal/cómo estuvo el concierto? Estuvo regular" "Qué tal/Cómo ha estado la película? Ha estado bien.. (en el mismo día) "Qué tal te fue la noche" Me fue bien.. ('fue' se refiere al verbo 'ir')

Cuando dices: "El día fue bien" estás usando el verbo "ir" . It's like "it went well". Si dices "El día fue bueno" estás usando el verbo "ser". Ambas expresiones son correctas.

y tambien ..al reves...puedes le preguntar a su amigo ..como le fue el dia ,,entonces el puede responder ..fue un buen dia. I hope I am right ..I have heard it that way
