Never approach a language studying grammar, especially a language with a very difficult grammar like Italian. In my opinion the first step should be to build vocabulary, I'd like to suggest you the following websites: - Duolingo - Memrise - Busuu - Bliu Bliu It's also very useful the software Rosetta Stone, but unfortunately it is not free, a little expensive though... While you are building up Italian vocabulary keep on talking with Italian native speakers here on Italki, if they speak a good English they can solve any doubt during your studies and afterwards they can help you with pronunciation and then with grammar. After learned a good basic Italian vocabulary, you can begin to listen to audio files, there are many podcast to learn Italian for English native speakers, It's important to be surrounded by the language, so if you are not in Italy, you should listen to podcast, watching films in Italian and so on... Obviously this is only the first stage... good luck and never give up! :)

If are determined just pick up the following items: -- grammar book with drills -- Italian songs with lyrics -- an easy bilingual text -- a good movie series on DVD with a fair amount of talk just to listen to the sounds, using English subtitles at first. I would also suggets to try to find a good teacher.
