Look for Word Frequency Lists. Once you know the 3,000 most common English words, you will be able to understand 97% of everything we write and say. From that point, you can learn new words through context. There's a wiki project for word frequency that is very good, and there are great flashcard programs for smart phones and computers like Anki that you can use to learn the words.
