Example: I checked out the book from the Library. Another way of use is when somebody is thoroughly looking at somebody due to attraction. Example: She is totally checking him out. I think she finds him attractive. Finally, "Checked out" can mean to look into or research something briefly. Example: I checked out the article last night and it looked interesting.
