do you use phonetic transcription to teach english? I found chinese students really love to use the international phonetic transcription system to study english. Some people even don't know how to pronounce correctly without the phonetic transcription. Do you find it useful? have you used it before in your class? I always say to my students we never use it outside China, and we wouldn't study it that hard. It is better to use the english standard transcription and follow the pronunciation with "the english writing logic". However chinese people has a very strong idea and a strong habit of using phonics transcription so is hard to get ride of them in class. Students always feels like something is missing. In my experience, I wish I'd studied it when I was learning english. We as spanish speakers don't have clear the vowels pronunciation, for us "hot, hat, heart, and cup" are pronounced as "A" like in "hasta la vista" so studying phonetic transcription would make it easier to understand the whole variety of english vowels.

Being a teacher, it's our responsibility to reproduce globally empowered students by teaching them at our best. I am an English language teacher from Leyte. IPA has been a big issue for my career sinceI honestly don't know how to use it properly. With due to this, I am not able to give my students with what they should learn. The main reason is that, I wasn't been taught properly with this phonetic alphabet during my college days and our curriculum was not focused well with it. One question is living in my head, "Why we need an IPA to transcribe other languages, can't we just use the English alphabet more systematically to write English? In fact, there are quite a few more sounds in English than there are in the English alphabet. There are 26 different letters, but something like 34 different sounds."

To add to what everyone has said we even use phonetic transcription in America in kindergarten and younger grades to help children when the first start writing and use it to encourage the children to write this way to begin with so they can get their point across and as they are doing this slowly correct their way of spelling into the correct way.

My English teacher always used the phonetic transcription in class, and I'm one of those who is unable to read a new word without seeing its phonetic transcription.

Hi, Henry. I was an English teacher in Brazil for many years and the inclusion of the IPA in my classes proved very useful. Some students went so far as to create nicknames for some of the symbols and if I reminded them of the nickname they could immediately pronounce a word they had been struggling with. Just don't ask what those nicknames were, cos I won't remember them.
