What does "to get ahold of someone" mean?

Usually it means to start communication with. Most often, on the phone, but these days maybe an email or text message.
It's the same as 'get hold of'. It can also be more literal - 'he got ahold of one of the survivors, and eventually managed to drag him into the boat'. or even somewhere in between 'If you manage to get ahold of a good woman, don't let her go'.
