Superlative of various
Hi,
Please see this sentence:
" The range of leisure activities is now more varied than ever before"
Varied is the superlative of various, isn't it?
If so, why don't we add the -iest ?
I read this note: Beware: Do not confuse adjectives and adverbs. 2-syllable adverbs ending in -y form their superlative with the words the most. Example: Of all the people I know my father drives the most quickly (quickliest) but I thought that in this case varied is an adjective.....
I'm quite confused!

quickliest is wrong ; it should be "quickest". I dont know if that rule is correct , but "most varied" is the only way of saying that idea.

Whoa, there. You are making it a bit overcomplicated for yourself. Let's look at this in a simpler way.
What is the comparative form in English vs. the superlative?
Obviously, with the comparative we are comparing two things. In the superlative form, we are comparing three or more, that notwithstanding, is not necessary for us to get into. But it answers in part your "most" question.
So if we have the comparative form of "more varied," what are we comparing? Note, at the end of the sentence the word "before" is there. So it suggests we are comparing two things, "before" and the present.
Another danger for you, "varied" is an adjective but it is the participle of the verb "vary." Don't confuse that with comparative and superlative forms of adjectives like fast, good, and far.
It doesn't take on that form.
Best of luck to you.

'Varied' is not the superlative of 'various.'
I don't think 'various' is a comparable adjective.
'Varied is a comparable adjective. The comparative is 'more varied.' The superlative is 'most varied.'

I should give you an example. "Varied": Of the numerous processes in the brain some are orderly, continuous, and varied. The more varied as in above sentence. One can find the most varied assortment of fruits and vegetables in this marketplace from throughout the world.
