What is he like?
- Well, he's sort of strange to be honest.
Is that a guy a cop?
- Sort of, he works for a private security company.

Also:
You can use it to mean a type of thing;
ex. He's the sort of person you can rely on.
ex. Dogs are the sort of animal which can feel your emotions.
You can also shorten it to "sorta", which means "a little".
ex. I'm sorta busy, can I talk to you later?
An alternative is "kinda" (short for kind of), very similar meaning. ("I'm kinda busy/I'm sorta busy...")
