His insistence is that the fruits of such an experience are nevertheless an illusion. But it is a ‘fiction [that] can make our lives worthwhile’.

Let me rephrase it for you. Even though , the fruits of such an experience IS an illusion as he insisted , it IS still a fiction that can make our lives worthwhile. "It" refers to what said earlier before the 'IS" ,which is " the fruits of the experience '
