What's the difference between 'nen' and 'toshi'?
Both are written as 年 and I am not sure when to use which. I try to memorize it according to the word it's used in but when it's used alone to just say 'year', I don't know which one to use.

Probably, when you put a figure before 年, you read it as nen, ねん、like 2016年(ni-sen juuroku nen). In other cases, you read it とし(to-shi), or どし(do-shi). When it is used alone, you should read as とし(to-shi)
