What's the difference between "thoughts on" and "thoughts about"?

In terms of meaning I would say they are the same, but “thoughts on” sounds more formal to me and as if you had considered an important subject carefully: "These are my thoughts on the issue”. If someone said “What are your thoughts on my new boyfriend?” it would sound a little strange to me.
