English literature, take it from the top! Any good literature books (In English) to start with? So. I've studied English literature at school for three years, and starting from Beowulf, we've got to Victorian age and Charles Dickens. However, we are studying it as a foreign literature, thus not focusing on more specific features or critique as sharply as in English-speaking countries (or as we do about our native language literature, italian), and nearly ignoring a precise exposition of historical background... In short, our book is pretty scanty :-). Does anyone know where to find (for free) on the internet any good or recommended English literature books or researches? To make up my mind. It's a shame to study "The rime of the ancient mariner" on a scarce paper sheet or two extra-shortened pages. Thank you in advance! :-) Goodbye!

Mr Thompson's Gutenberg suggestion is excellent. You will find many classics there. Also have a look at this list: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/aug/17/the-100-best-novels-written-in-english-the-full-list You can of course buy books very cheaply on Amazon and from the Book Depository. If you want a broad history of English literature, then find a good 'History of English Literature', there are many. As for actually READING novels: it might be more fun to start later. Have a look at Oscar Wilde's plays for example. They are considered classics, short, and VERY funny.

Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page) has a lot of literature that is in the public domain. This includes The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/151). Hope this helped.
