"Att tycka om" eller "att gilla"? I have learned that both "att tycka om" and "att gilla" mean "to like." Are they interchangeable, or is one preferred over the other in certain situations? So far, the language learning tools I'm using (Duolingo and Memrise) have used "att tycka om," but it seems like every Swede who's filmed a "how to speak Swedish" video on YouTube has used "att gilla."

Hej Zhang, (english see below) jag tror, att "tycka om" används snarare i högtal medan "gilla" är 'slang'. Dessutom är "att tycka om": - en verb som konjugationas med "-er"(och därmed oregelbunden) - en partikel verb (och därmed svarare att använda) Följeaktligen är "att gilla" lättare att använda. Hoppas att det hjälper dig. :) (I am no native but I received following explanation: "Att tycka om" is rather the formal way of asking after one's well-being, while "att gilla" seems to be more slang. Here is a further guess: Additionally, "att tycka om" is: - a verb that is konjugated by adding the suffix -er (jag tyck-er om instead of Jag gilla-r) - a particle verb which in general is harder to use as non - particle - verbs. So "att gilla" is plainly said easier to use and thus more appropriate for these youtube videos. Hope it helps. :)
