Is my grammar book correct? My book says the two sentences are correct? Are they correct? 1 Does he come tomorrow? = Will he come tomorrow? 2 He insisted that he should do some shopping with friends when the robbery happened. Thanks

'No' is the simple answer. I suspect your grammar book was written by a non-native. 1. We only use the present simple for future events when we are talking about an item on a fixed schedule. For example, if you know that the man who cleans the windows in your office block regularly comes on the same two or three days every week, but you can't remember exactly which days, you might - at a pinch - check by asking 'Does he come tomorrow?'. But it's very unlikely. Even in that case, 'Is he coming tomorrow?' or 'Will he be coming tomorrow?' is more natural. In other situations, we could also say 'Is he going to come tomorrow?' or 'Will he come tomorrow?' 99.9% of the time, when non-natives use a present simple to talk about a future event, it is an incorrect usage. I suspect that this is the case here. 2. This is completely wrong. You cannot use 'should' in this way. It should be 'He insisted that he was doing ...' or 'He insisted that he had been doing..' Likewise, 'He insisted that he should be innocent' is incorrect. It should be 'He insisted that he was innocent'. I can only presume that whoever devised these sentences is over-applying what they learnt about the subjunctive mood. What is this so-called grammar book, by the way, and who wrote it?

The sentence "Does he come tomorrow?" could be used, but is rarely correct. The main context where it would work it a situation where something happens on a schedule. For example: "The garbage man comes to pick up our trash every Monday" "Oh, does he come tomorrow?" However, in general, this kind of sentence is grammatically incorrect, as there are mixed tenses. 'Does he...' suggests the present tense, whilst 'tomorrow' suggests the future tense. I can't think of a situation where the second sentence is correct, because the tenses are mixed. The sentence structure 'X ... when Y' in this context should mean: 1) He was doing X 2) Then Y happened, which stopped X However, the tenses don't line up. We would need: "He was insisting that he should do some shopping with friends when the robbery happened" Or a rewrite of the sentence.

The correct form is; Will he come tomorrow? It is to happen in the future. Does he come? means is he coming now - now is not tomorrow. :) It can also be used as a general question Does he usually come tomorrow? Meaning would you expect him to come tomorrow if that is what he usually does.
