I could read these two prhases:
- "Das ist ein Apfel";
- "Sie isst einen Apfel"
Why sometimes they say "ein Apfel" and sometimes they say "einen Apfel"?

When something is done to the apple, it is "einen Apfel". When the apple does something or is something, it is 'ein Apfel'. / Siehst du einen Apfel? Ich habe einen Apfel. Wir fanden einen Apfel. // Ein Apfel hängt am Baum. Ein Apfel fehlt. Ein Apfel am Tag versetzt dem Doktor den Schlag. Was ist besser als ein Apfel? (Antwort: zwei Äpfel)

Bei “Das ist ein Apfel“ ist Apfel der 1.Fall: Nominativ. Man fragt: “Wer oder was?“
Bei “Er isst einen Apfel“ ist Apfel der 4.Fall: Akkusativ. Man fragt: “Wen oder was?“
