But when you use the word "pessoas" you have to put the sentence on plural. And when you use the word "gente" you have to put the sentence on singular. Ex. There are many people here. 1) Tem muitaS pessoas aqui 2) Tem muita gente aqui But the word "gente" can also be used to refer to a group of people that includes you. Ex. We are going to the movie. ( A gente vai ao cinema) or (Nós vamos ao cinema) Let's go with us (Vamos com a gente)

So talking about specific people or all the people in a country: pessoas but talking about people in general: gente? Like muita gente gosta do chocolate? But As pessoas em Portugal são simpáticas. ?

Brazilians use a lot of "a gente" beside of "nós". In Portugal just low class say it beside of "nós". Os rapazes antes de mim já responderam corretamente, no sentido de que não há grande diferença entre os dois. A maior diferença, segundo o meu ponto de vista, é de nível de linguagem, o que ninguém respondeu até agora. O fato é que "gente" está muito mais relacionado com o nível informal da linguagem, enquanto "pessoas" é um termo mais formal. Então, para usar um exemplo ligeiramente parecido com o do Filipe, se você diz: "Meu, tem muita gente na Paulista", embora correto, não é tão formal quanto "Há muitas pessoas na Avenida Paulista". Entretanto, você pode encontrar "gente" em contextos formais e monitorados, a fim de tornar a conversação um pouco menos tensa. P.S.: I'm only a learner of English, so, I'm not so confident in terms of translation, but I would understand "gente" as "folks" and "pessoas" as "people" in some contexts, so, the first word is more informal, although it can be used in some formal contexts.
