Please help with the understanding of the following sentences. But some of the tears I shed were for the other things I knew I was going to have to change. I’d attempted to quit drinking before, but had never lasted more than a few weeks. And I’d gone up and down on the scale more times than I could remember, but this high number was a new low for me. It turned out I didn’t actually know everything. I knew a little, but not enough to prevent me from getting to this place. I had reached my personal rock bottom, and I didn’t want to know what I would find if I went any deeper. The “one day” I had always told myself I would turn things around by was finally here. Q1: 'gone up and down on the scale' does it physically mean the action of going up and down for many time? or does it mean the weight of the author goes up and down? Q2: 'this high number was a new low for me' The weight of the author is already high, but it will rise from this point to a higher level?

Q1: Yes, if by scale he means a weight scale, then "gone up and down on the scale" means his weight has increased and decreased. Q2: No, "this high number was a new low for me" is a play on words, meaning his highest weight was a new personal failure (or low point). Hope that helps!

This person has reached a personal low (emotionally). This person has tried several times to quit drinking and has been unsuccessful. The person has tried to lose weight, but has ended up gaining it back each time (Q1-up and down on the scale) and now, the body weight as shown by the scale is the (Q2) highest it has ever been and therefore an emotional low for this person who seems depressed (VERY sad). This person thinks he or she needs to learn more, because the person did not know how to lose and keep off the weight or stop drinking for more than a few days. This person has reached his or her rock bottom (emotional lowest) and does not want to know what will happen if he or she continues to drink and continues to gain weight, so the day for change is today. (edited to correct my typos).

The scale could be a reference to the amount of drink they are partaking in. So 1 could be 1 drink a day to 10 being 5 bottles or more (lots of drink). Therefore Q1 is that scale reference where as you go down you drink less (or nothing) but as you go up you drink more. It might also be that they are drinking throughout the day, rather than just at night OR it could me they were drinking alone rather than with friends. And Q2 Shows that the high amount of drink they were having, was more than they have ever had before. It may be that they were an alcoholic (seems factual from the passage) and as such that amount of drinking or increased duration or drinking would be considered a new LOW on for them. If we then considered what could be the next stages, then to go lower they could end up on the street drinking all the time and eventually death from intoxication or liver failure. So they knew at that point they needed to stop drinking.

Olivia is probably right. In the section previous, they also talk about the weight of debt they own. Without any other context, I'd also suspect the "scale" was their own weight, but it could be more figurative & more broad.
