Spanish possessive Pronouns with definite article +de +pronoun
This is an exercise in my grammar book with the answers from the back of the book (in brackets). I thought I understood the previous exercises just using mi, el mío etc but now I am really confused as I cannot work out what the English equivalent of the phrases is so don't fully understand the meaning. Any simple explanations would be appreciated!! The question is

Vamos a hablar claramente. Escribe las palabras necesarias. Use the definite article + the preposition de + the pronoun él, ella etc

1. Las rosas de Ana y las suyas (de él) his
2. mis promesas y las suyas (de ellas) hers
3. el compromiso de Pedro y el suyo (él de ellos) theirs m
4. tu investigación y la suya (la de ellas) theirs f
5. mi problema y el suyo (él de ustedes) yours formal pl
6. las palabras de Ana y las suyas (las de ustedes) yours formal pl
7. mis sentimientos y los suyos (los de ustedes) yours formal sing
8. el auto de Lucy y el suyo (él de ustedes) yours formal sing

The issue is that suyo/suya/suyos/suyas agrees in number and gender with the thing possessed and not, as in English, the possessor. Las rosas de Ana y las suyas could refer to Ana's roses and his/hers/yours/theirs.

If we want to indicate who the owner is, we would need to say something like "Las rosas de Ana y las de él": In this case, the article changes to agree with rosas, and the pronoun tells us whose roses they are.

With las mías, of course, you don't have this problem.

I don't understand clearly what the exercise wants you to do, so I will explain you only the first and fourth phrases and if it helps you, tell me, ok?
Well, in " 1. Las rosas de Ana y las suyas (de él) his" and following the indication, I think they're asking you to write this structure: Las rosas de Ana y las de él. And in "4. tu investigación y la suya (la de ellas) theirs f" it would be: Tu investigación y la de ellas.
I don't understand why they're asking you to do this, maybe to let you know that you can choose to say "las suyas" o "las de él" in this context.
Answering to you question about an equivalent in English, I'm not sure if it's possible to say in English this " The ones of him" for the first phrase. If it's possible, this is the equivalent.

why do we use"las" and not "los" or "la"? because we are talking about "rosas" and it is " female and plural"

Los vasos de Juan y los de él
La mesa de Héctor y la de él

*In the case of the first and second person ( yo, tú) it is easier
yours=tuyo
mine=mío
This is yours= Esto es tuyo
This is mine= Esto es mío
