What is the difference between 고향 and 출신? I've always known that the word for 'hometown' would be '고향', but today I was studying from a Korean textbook of mine and it had the word '출신' down for hometown (the sentence in my book is 저는 서울 출신이에요). I am a bit confused about the difference between these two words... do you use one of the words to express something and the other something else? or do you use them in different situations? please explain if you can... thank you!

~출신 is just about facts and references; that you were born there. It's also used for work/study experiences 삼성 출신: former Samsung employee 서울대 출신: someone who got his/her degree at SNU(Seoul National University) 검사 출신 변호사: a lawyer who used to be a prosecutor 고향 on the other hand is what can be translated to hometown with all the attachments and childhood memories.

고향 could be translated as 'hometown'. 출신 would be '~from'. I prefet to say 'I'm from~'. So it's the same in Korean. 나는 창원출신이에요
