Subject verb object.
sometimes
Subject adverb verb object.
.
Subject, object tend to be nouns, things.
Adverbs qualify verbs, the way in which the verb acted, how things happened.
.
When a noun, such as subject or object is replaced by a clause, then the clause is likely a noun-clause.
When a clause replaces the verb, then it's likely a verb clause.
When a clause replaces an adverb, that is it describes how something happened, it's proabbly an adverbial clause.
.
Clauses have verbs, they are complete sub-sentences in some sense.
When you have a clause, a complete sub-sentence in a sentence, just see which it replaces.
.
Examples from the web
.
He is a genius .
Whoever thought of the idea is a genius.
.
Send him a note.
Send whoever interviewed him a note.
.
I remember yesterday.
I remember the day when I bought my first car.
.
I couldn't feel anger against him.
I couldn't feel anger against him because I liked him too much.
.
here "because I liked him too much" modifies the "feel" so it's acting as an adverb.
