We have a saying that goes something like "being tried in the court of public opinion." In essence, if someone is arrested, and the newspapers write about the arrest, people already start to form an opinion about the person's guilt or innocence when they read the morning newspaper/watch the morning news. It doesn't matter if the person is found "not guilty" by a jury months or years from now, the public perception tends to be more enduring.
