Sulee,
The fact that English has become the international language is an accident of history. English is in no way superior to any other major language. Arabic, Russian, French, Mandarin, and the rest, are all wonderful languages. Any of the major languages, given the right conditions, could serve as the international language.
Basic English grammar is simpler than the grammars of some languages. English nouns have no gender, the conjugation of basic verbs is simplified, and English is without a complicated case system. However, once you get past the basics, you find that English has a complicated system of tenses, moods, voices, difficult spelling, and a myriad of exceptions.
One interesting fact: It is estimated that there are now more English speakers in China than there are in America.

Hello Sulee,
Yes the main reason is the colonisation by England and the big and fast economic development of the USA.
But perhaps I can add one more subjective reason is the grammar in english is more simple than other languages and the prononciation could be so different from an English person to an American or a Canadian one...
To me, when you speak english you feel more free than another language...

Hi Sulee,
One reason is that so many areas of the world were colonized by Enland. Even after most of them became independent, they conintued to use english.
Another big reason is because the United States quickly became a major economic and cultural superpower in the world.
