To better understand the translation, I'd simply put the context into words.
It seems to be an excerpt from one of the famous Aesop's fables named 'The Fox and the Grapes' from which the expression "sour grapes" originated. I would rewrite the above Malayalam sentence as follows:
(The Fox) was unable to / could not reach the bunch of grapes (hanging high on the vine) despite several leaps.
