The meanings overlap. In ordinary conversational English, "rough" has several common meanings. It can mean having an irregular surface; it is the opposite of "smooth." "The wooden board was rough. I used sandpaper on it and made it smooth." It can mean partly shaped, not completely finished. "I have a rough draft written, but I'd rather not show it to you until it is finished." It can mean something that is difficult or uncomfortable. "Our first baby just wouldn't sleep through the night. That can be very rough on young parents." It can mean a person who is violent or unrefined. "Don't go in that bar. It attracts a rough crowd." "Rude" nowadays most often means "impolite," "discourteous," or "disrespectful." "He was angry at the driver who cut in ahead of him, and he made a rude gesture with his hand." There are some other meanings, but they are rare or old-fashioned. "Rude" can mean partly shaped or unfinished. A poem about the first battle of the American Revolution begins. "By the rude bridge that arched the flood..." It means that the bridge was made of something like logs or unfinished lumber; it did the job of bridging the river but it was ugly. "Rude" can mean vulgar or gross.

Rude [ro͞od] means "impolite" or "ill-mannered". For example: "What he said was very rude" means that he was impolite. Usually, older people will say younger people are rude when they aren't respectful of the older person's age and wisdom. Rough [ruff] means "not gentle" or "violent". For example: "She was playing rough with the other kids" means that she was not gentle with the way she was treating the other kids. Rough can also be used in the sentence "His voice was rough" to indicate that his voice sounded raspy or harsh to the listener.
