when u use it as an adj. u should read it as chang,it means something is long,for instance,这个绳子好长啊.And if u use it as a verb.u should read it as zhang,it means something or someone grow up.for instance, 他长高了 or 庄稼长高了

长 by itself have two different meanings. It can be distinquished by pronounciation and in writing where it is combined with another word(s)
长【cháng】Meaning: long; length; of long duration; steadily; regularly; strong point; forte.
长【zhǎng】Meaning: older; elder; senior; eldest; oldest; chief; head; grow; develop; cone into; being to grow; from; acquire; enhance; increase.

长:
chang:u can take it as adj. like "chang 长的"
e.g.长发=长的发(long hair )
zhang:u can take it as verb.
e.g.长头发=growing hair
so..choose the right pronounce by its function.
hope it's helpful.

长【zhǎng】:This pronounciation means grew. eg:我长(zhang)大了。=i grown up.
长【cháng】:This pronounciation means long. eg:看,她舌头真长(chang)!=Look, her tongue's long=She likes telling anything out what she heard.
