There are different types of English, but difficult to say exactly how many. The basic two styles are US (American) English and UK (British) English. Unfortunately classification gets sloppy... I found one list that declared Australian English to be in the same category as American English(!). Australian English is actually closer to the British style, but you could also say it's a different type of English due to the different words, accents and expressions used. I'd suggest each region that uses English could be considered to use variation of English. Complex, isn't it? ;) Update: Otto... we Australians write nouns with capitals? I understand the German connection you mean, but could you give an example? I'm just curious, I never noticed! :)

I have learnt English in Ireland. And it was very, very good. I found ut that some phrses are very different in the US, and again very different in Australia. In both countries, people spell words differntly, sometimes, too. For instance "theatre" (Ireland), theater (US). And in Australia they often write nouns with capitals (which is great, since my mother-tongue is German). Important is: Once you know one, you will get along in any part of the world. Hope this helps, regards, Otto

Don't worry about how many types of English or different accents there are. What is important is learning English correctly with correct pronunciation. Any half decent teacher or course book will now teach international English and expose you gradually to different accents, including British and American English and non-natives speaking English.
