This is a condition called sleep paralysis, though there are many folkloric expressions used to describe this. The incubus has been included in this list (not sure exactly why?), but the general idea is that some spirit, demon or witch is sitting on your chest. Which is pretty much what it feels like. I often suffer from hypnagogic sleep paralysis, ie. when going to sleep. The important thing is not to panic, it will pass.
