Why do we say news spreads and breaks? Why is "news" singular but ends with "s"? No native speakers, please. An exercise in writing. Best answer gets a free lesson.

News ----- north, east, west and south. So the "s" doesn't mean pl.

I found out it has become so since the 14th century. It was used in Bible translation for the Latin word "nova" ("novus" = "a new thing").

"News" is not just singular, but is aswell plural for you cannot say "i have new for you" because that would be considered an incorrect sentance and therefor rendering the meaning non-exsitant. So unto that we must write "news" and reffer it as to both sides (singular and plural) eventhough with it having the "s" at the end sets it as being a "plural" word, tis not. So even if ou only have one piece of news to report, it is still used as "news".. I hope that helps.
