Of course the English language has many derivations, and the rules are much coherent when you know about words' origins; Mr. Kraut9 comment is complete and excessive agnosticism.

Well, English spelling of Greek derivatives is taken from Latin then French interpretations of the original Greek. Confusing, hey. :) When using Greek words and names, the old Roman writers wrote ɸ as 'ph', even though they had their own 'f' sound. French later adopted these spellings, and they were later taken to England.

When you learn language you need to forget about logic. There is no logic in language (except computer languages). It's not math. There are plenty of illogical things and exceptions when you learn whatever language.
