RAGTIME (1890-1910)
The name comes from "ragged time" and it is often shortened as "rag". This musical genre was originated in the United States of America and it became very popular at the end of the XIX century. It derived from the classical European march in matters of structure and harmony. Its melodies are syncopated and downbeated. Among its roots you can find elements from the John P. Sousa's style, European dances and compositions, and African rhythms.
It is one of the first actual American musical forms and an decisive influence to the posterior development of jazz music. It also inspired European composers, like Debussy who wrote a piece imitating the style ("Golliwog's Cake Walk").
It fell into forgotness from 1920 to the 70's, when it had an important revival, in part, thank to the movie "The Sting."
