I have a pet dog called Paddington.
You would say that his or her name is Paddington. ‘Its name is . . ‘ sounds too unattached, as though you were talking about something useful you had acquired.

You can use he/she/they instead of 'it'. It sounds a little impersonal if you call your pet 'it'.
