I studied English all through school in Japan, then went abroad to the US and Canada. And when someone said "How's it going" — I froze. Completely. Not a single word came out. All those years of study. Gone in a second. I still remember the heat in my face. The way I looked at the floor. The voice in my head that said: maybe I'm just not good at this. That moment changed how I teach forever. Most Japanese language programs — even professional ones — use the same method Japan used on me: grammar and rules first, speaking later. In my lessons, you will never read a sentence like "Watashi wa shinbun wo yomimasu." — "I read the newspaper." Nobody says that. Nobody needs that. Because here's what I know after 4 years of teaching: language only sticks when it's connected to something real — a moment you've lived, a conversation you actually need, a feeling you want to express.
