Native German teacher with 30+ experience and English teacher CELTA Certified. I was born in the North German city of Kiel on the Baltic Sea with a love for languages. I studied English at a U.S. university and have an M.A. in German literature and linguistics from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. I also have a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University to teach English as a second language to adult learners. I have worked as a language instructor in the U.S. and Europe for over 25 years and have lived in England, Belgium and France. Currently, I am located in Arlington, USA but am spending my summers in Germany and France. I feel passionate about teaching languages as a gate to our world view and I believe that education is a gift that keeps on giving. I have also spent many hours volunteering as a teacher in more vulnerable communities, such as refugee classes and online lessons for young women. I don't follow one particular teaching method. I consider the learner's particular needs, their learning style and I try to find out what's most effective. I prefer a student centered approach. Activities are chosen to work on all four language skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing). Communication and discourse is an important part of my lessons but I also take other systems into account such as grammar, pronunciation and learning vocabulary. Everything is connected. Thus we might have a discussion about time and read a text about the importance of being on time in English or German society which might lead to a lesson on telling time.

Nach einer halben Stunde bin ich sicher, dass Monika eine sehr gute Lehrerin ist. Sie ist freundlich, hilfsbereit und spricht auf meinem Niveau. Eine sehr gute Klasse! Wenn man Deutsch lerne will, würde ich sie auf jeden Fall empfehlen.
